We take a look and discuss:
What is reading comprehension?
Reading is a bit like a thrilling treasure hunt, where comprehension is the grand prize. It's not just about deciphering words; it's about discovering meaning, forging connections, and immersing oneself in the narrative.
Reading comprehension is the reason for reading, if a reader can’t understand the words or make connections then they aren’t really reading. It refers to the readers ability to understand, good readers are purposeful, active, and are able to absorb what they read, as well as being able to make sense of it and analyze.
Reading comprehension can be complex and involves several key processes:
Effective decoding
Before we can make sense of what we read we need to be able to recognise words in text. Without effectively being able to do this the reader's focus will be on deciphering letters, words, and sentences, without deriving meaning.
Vocabulary
For many reasons even if the reader is able to recognise a word, it doesn't mean the word's meaning is known. Vocabulary refers to not just knowing a word's meaning, but wider concepts that might be represented by the word. Without knowing and understanding the key words within text, a reader could not understand the text itself.
World knowledge
Naturally as readers we bring our own worlds to the text to try to understand and relate. A reader would benefit from having diverse experiences to draw upon. A reader might misunderstand the meaning of a text without any relevant world knowledge to make sense of it.
Monitoring
Good readers think about their own reading, and can notice and identify when they lose meaning while reading. They can also recognise when and how to fix their comprehension problems, such as by asking for help, or re-reading a text.
Comprehension strategies
Comprehension is not just a passive process, but rather the reader must be active. Forging a relationship with the text by questioning it, and there are many strategies readers can use to do this.
Reading comprehension strategies
So what strategies can we use? There’s lots of fun methods and strategies, akin to literary tools in our quest for understanding:
Activate prior knowledge: Imagine building a puzzle where each new piece seamlessly connects with what you already know. That's the magic of activating prior knowledge.
Visualize the text: Transform words into a mental movie. Picture the scenes, characters, and settings vividly, and suddenly, the story leaps off the page.
Ask questions: Curiosity is our guiding star! Engage in a lively conversation with the text, the characters, and the plot. It's like having a debate with the author.
Make connections: Forge links between the story and your own experiences. It’s like finding common ground with the characters, making the narrative resonate on a personal level.
Summarize: Condense the essence of the information. Imagine you're summarizing the story for a friend in a few succinct sentences, distilling the narrative's core.
